The Rise of the Power Nap

Not so long ago, napping had a terrible reputation. A quick doze—five, ten, or thirty minutes—was something associated with dotty pensioners in sensible slippers, tucking into tinned mackerel on toast at 5pm before winding down with a mug of Horlicks. Naps were seen as the preserve of the frail and superannuated, not the vibrant and vital. If you needed a lift, the thinking went, you booked a treatment like a gay massage—not forty winks.

But the cultural tide turned. From the 1990s onwards, the term power nap began seeping into everyday life. Suddenly, naps weren’t for the weak; they were for high-flying executives catching a 20-minute snooze under the desk before dazzling the boardroom with brilliance. The nap was rebranded as a lifestyle accessory: chic, clever, and decidedly modern.

Science Says Yes

New research has given the humble nap yet another boost—adding happiness to its growing list of benefits. Conducted at the University of Hertfordshire, the study surveyed over a thousand people. It confirmed what earlier studies had shown: naps under 30 minutes improve focus, energy, and creativity. But here’s the kicker—short naps also make people happier.

There’s even a new word for the post-nap glow: nappiness (groan).

But beware: cross the 30-minute mark and the benefits vanish, replaced by grogginess and even potential health risks. The magic is in the brevity.

Napping at Work? Dream On.

Frustratingly, only 11% of people in the study said they were allowed to nap at work. Imagine if offices embraced the power nap: productivity would soar, creativity would ignite, and workplace wellbeing would finally be more than a buzzword.

Instead, too many offices remain little more than corporate prisons, demanding constant output while employees run themselves into the ground.

If that sounds familiar, and a nap isn’t an option, there’s another way to recharge: book yourself a 90-minute gay massage. It’s restorative, sensual, and guaranteed to leave you happier than any stolen office snooze.
